The Pecos Wilderness
Area in the Santa Fe National Forest is one of the most popular outdoor
destinations in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north-central New Mexico.
Its natural beauty is matched only by its abundance of outdoor recreational
opporunities. Its proximity to Santa Fe, just 30 minutes away, makes it
very accessible for easy day trips. Overnight visitors can choose from
cabins, vacation rentals, and several campgrounds. Popular outdoor activities
include fishing, hiking, horseback riding and winter sports, just to name
a few. The Village of Pecos, which lies at the eastern edge of the wilderness,
is a small, friendly community where visitors can get gas, groceries and
supplies, dine out at several fine restaurants and cafes, and visit the
puebloan ruins at the Pecos National Historical Park just east of town.
The photographs in this
photo tour were taken in during the late summer and early fall of 2006.
They highlight the scenic drive into the wilderness and some of the mountain
trails along the way. Related links for the Pecos Wilderness and the Village
of Pecos are listed near the bottom of this page.
