The Ruidoso area offers visitors a wide range of outdoor adventure and cultural attractions. Warm weather travelers find cool comfort in the higher elevations of the Sacramento Mountains, while winter sports enthusiasts enjoy skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling. And what better place to play than the birthplace of Smokey the Bear, in the Lincoln National Forest in south-central New Mexico.

The photographs in this photo tour were taken in early May of 2006. They highlight some of the scenery and local attractions of the Ruidoso area, including: Cloudcroft, Sunspot, Fort Stanton and Mayhill. Related links for Ruidoso and Lincoln National Forest are listed near the bottom of this page.

"Of Sun and Snow"

A blanketing of snow rivals the white dome telescope unit at the solar observatory.

"White Crosses"
Fort Stanton Cemetery
Historic Fort Stanton, New Mexico

The white crosses of the Fort Stanton cemetery stand in dire contrast to the backdrop of the forested mountains.

"Leafless Canopy"
Sacramento Mountains
Near Mayhill, New Mexico

A low canopy of leafless tree limbs lends a haunting mood to this setting for horse and burro.
