The Very Large Array,
often referred to as the VLA, is a complex system of radio telescopes located
in the open plains of the high desert approx. 50 miles west of Socorro
along Hwy. 60. A "Y" shaped track system spreading out over several miles
allows for the placement of the 27 antennas over a large area, with an
effective resolution of 22 miles across. An easy self-guided tour of the
facility allows access to interpretive exhibits and a closer look at the
antenna assemblies.
The photographs in this
photo tour were taken in November of 2006. They highlight the harmonious
contrast between science and nature found at the Very Large Array. Related
